Roger Williams at Prospect Terrace

The 15-foot tall granite statue of theologian Roger Williams in Prospect Terrace was designed by architect Ralph Thomas Walker and dedicated in June of 1939.

When Roger Williams died in 1683, he was buried on his property (where the Roger Williams Memorial park now stands on North Main Street). In an attempt to honor him, his remains were moved to the Old North Burial Ground in 1860. Roots of an apple tree next to his original grave grew around his body, so that it looked similar to a human form. The so-called "Williams Root" is on display at the John Brown House Museum on the East Side of Providence.

In 1939, the remainder of Roger Williams' bones were placed in a bronze casket beneath his statue in Prospect Terrace.
